After condemning the unrepentant cities (Mt 11:20-24), Jesus prays to God the Father. In just a few short lines, Jesus’ prayer to the Father is a powerful blessing that reveals the closeness of the Father and the Son. He reveals the perfect love between the Father and the Son. He reveals His perfect obedience to, and reverence for, the Father. He expresses His heart-deep thanks for His Father’s blessings. He acknowledges the power the Father has given Him in the world. He confirms the Father's dominion over all Creation.
Jesus’ prayer also reveals how men can draw closer to God. Through His example, Jesus demonstrates how men can speak with God. He reveals that through the Father’s gracious and mysterious will, God is hidden from the arrogant, the self-proclaimed “wise”, and revealed to the innocent, those who are receptive and dependent like infants; only through humble obedience and dependence can men be open to receiving the life-saving Wisdom of Jesus. Jesus reveals He is the only source who can reveal the wisdom of God the Father.
Jesus’ call for men to take on His yoke can fundamentally transform a man’s life. The yoke is the yoke of the Son, the way of humble obedience to the Father and the willingness to do God the Father’s will, and through taking on Christ’s yoke, men can be intimately united with Him. Jesus promises that those men who choose to freely commit to “yoke” themselves to Him will receive rest for their souls from the heavy burdens of life; Jesus will teach men how to live with humility, gentleness and love. His yoke becomes the vocation of disciples to labor for the Kingdom of Heaven.
Be awed by Jesus Christ
Ponder in your heart, the astounding truth which Jesus, Son of the Father, reveals: though appearing with a Human Nature (flesh and blood), Jesus is a Divine Person of the Trinity with Authority and Dominion over all Creation; as the Son, Jesus is in perfect union with God the Father and has exclusive Divine Knowledge of the Father; the Son reveals the startling truth that the Father is selective, mysteriously allowing some to come to faith while to others, faith is hidden; Jesus confirms that He is the exclusive way for men to come to God the Father, an allusion to eternal salvation.
Be a Catholic father who demonstrates the Father
Realize: Modern society’s spiral into decay and despair is because large and growing numbers of fathers are not close to their children; every Catholic man is called to draw close to God the Father so he can be a living icon of the love of God the Father to others.
Believe: Reflect upon Closeness with God the Father (CCC 151, 473, 503, 532, 536, 2603).
Pray: Almighty Father, help me build the Virtue of Duty/Responsibility (a part of Justice) so I strive to draw close to You, experience Your fatherly love, and I become a Catholic father who is a demonstration of Your fatherly love to my family and many others.
Be blessed by yoking yourself to Christ
Realize: After joyfully proclaiming the closeness of God the Father and the Son, Jesus promises men who unite (yoke) themselves to Him will be given rest from their burdens.
Believe: Reflect upon Yoking yourself to Christ (CCC 459, 520, 932).
Pray: Jesus, Son of the Father, help me build the Virtue of Obedience (a part of Justice) so I humbly submit my life to You, obediently take on the Yoke of Your Gospel, and receive the holiness, rest, and peace You promise.
