19th Week in Ordinary time – Sunday – Cycle B – Jn 6:41-51
Commentary
Continuing The Sermon of the Bread of Life, Jesus reveals that He is the bread of life and that men who believe in Him will never thirst or hunger again. The Jewish crowd, afraid to confront Jesus directly, rebelliously murmurs among themselves, skeptically dismissing Jesus as simply, the “son of Joseph” (and Mary). Echoing back to Moses’ rebuke of the Israelites who complained about the manna during the Exodus, Jesus bluntly rebukes the Jews, telling them to stop murmuring (Jn 6:41-43; omitted from today’s Liturgy).
Jesus continues His stinging rebuke of the Jews, bluntly revealing that God the Father draws men to Jesus and that men who do not come to Jesus have failed to hear and learn from God the Father. Jesus again claims divine intimacy with God (Jn 6:38), going further to reveal He has actually seen the Father and those who listen to Him have been actually “taught by God.” Jesus emphatically reiterates that men who believe in Him will have eternal life.
Jesus confronts the Jews with the truth that even though miraculous, the manna which fed men in the desert during the Exodus did not give eternal life. In startling contrast, Jesus forcefully reveals that He is the “living bread” which comes down from Heaven and gives eternal life, an allusion to the immortal life given by the Tree of Life in Eden, life which Adam lost due to sin. Jesus now stuns the crowd by revealing that the “living bread” men must eat for eternal life is His own glorified flesh; “the bread I shall give” is a prophetic reference to His Crucifixion and the perpetual gift of the Eucharist in the Mass.
Be awed by Jesus Christ
God the Father Almighty is infinite and eternal, and precedes and causes the creation of time and space. Ponder and be stunned by the Divine Knowledge of the Son of God who has “seen the Father” and yet has walked among men on the earth, taking the appearance of a mere man.
Seek Counsel from the Spirit to confront sin
Realize: While Jesus continuously and courageously rebuked those who sinned, today, many Catholic bishops, priests, deacons and catechists fail to continually emphasize and preach about the soul-killing damage of sin in its many forms, vigorously call men to repent from sin and vehemently urge every Catholic man to regularly receive the Sacrament of Penance.
Believe: Reflect upon Mortal and Venial Sin (CCC 1849-1876) and Repentance from Sin (CCC 541, 674, 1226, 1425-1433, 1889).
Pray: Holy Spirit, give me Counsel so my sins are made abundantly clear to me in a deep Examination of Conscience, I am filled with soul-deep contrition and so I rush to receive the joy of being forgiven by Christ in the glorious Sacrament of Penance; Lord, please strengthen Your bishops, priests and deacons to confront the epidemic of sin and lead their flocks to repent and be saved.
Give thanks and receive the Fruits of the Eucharist
Realize: Jesus reveals that He has the Divine Power to give eternal life to every Catholic man who eats the “living bread which [comes] down from Heaven”; this astounding blessing infinitely exceeds any and all the wonderful pleasures that a man can experience in his lifetime.
Believe: Reflect upon the awesome Fruits of Holy Communion (CCC 1391-1401, 1416).
Pray: Jesus, Divine Priest, help me build the Virtue of Gratitude (a part of Justice) so I recognize, give thanks for, and regularly receive the blessings of peace and happiness through the reception of You precious Body and Blood in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.
