Liturgy

6th Sunday of Easter – Sunday – Cycle C – Jn 14:23-29

Commentary

Jesus continues His Farewell Discourse (Jn 13:31-16:33) during Holy Week, preparing the Apostles for their mission after His departure. After promising that those men who love Him and keep His commandments will be loved by the Father, Jesus is somewhat disobediently challenged by Judas (also called Thaddeus – Mt 10:3) to show Himself to the world.

Ignoring Thaddeus’ question, Jesus instead reaffirms that men who love Him must keep His word, and that God the Father and the Son will reward those men by dwelling within them (make a home). In a mild rebuke to Thaddeus for his prideful challenge, Jesus emphasizes the need for obedience: God the Father decrees that men can recognize those who do not love Jesus, because they disobediently do not keep the commandments of Jesus. To help men after His departure be obedient, Jesus confirms the existence of the Trinity, promising that the Father and the Son will send the Holy Spirit to ensure men can continue to learn about Jesus’ “word” and remember it.

Jesus reassures the Apostles by making additional promises. Due to His union with God the Father, Jesus promises that He has the power to bestow supernatural peace on those who love Him; to receive peace, men must reject anxiety and fear of the world, and deliberately accept His gift of peace. Jesus again promises that despite His departure (His Passion and death) He will return; in the meantime, the Apostles should rejoice that Jesus will be with God the Father. Seeking to comfort the anxious Apostles, Jesus urges them to remember His prophetic words about His coming death (and return), so they will be strengthened when the horror of the Crucifixion occurs.

Be awed by Jesus Christ

Be astounded by Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit: Divine Knowledge, Jesus has intimate and perfect knowledge of God the Father and the Holy Spirit; Jesus has the Divine Authority to direct the Holy Spirit to come to men who love God; Divine Power, through the Holy Spirit, Jesus has the supernatural power to instruct His men, mysteriously effecting their thoughts, which startlingly requires a change in the physical structure and chemistry of the brains of men.

Be grateful for the Spirit’s help in the Spiritual Combat

Realize: Like the Apostles, every Catholic man needs constant help in the Spiritual Combat which is why Jesus promised and has sent the Holy Spirit to men who love Him and keep the commandments in the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

Believe: Recall that Jesus has Sent the Holy Spirit to you (CCC 243-244, 692, 2466, 2623-2625).

Pray: Jesus, Sender of the Spirit, give me the Virtue of Gratitude (a part of Justice) so I recognize and always thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to help me in my day to day struggles to battle sin and grow in holiness in the Spiritual Combat.

Honor and rely on the Indwelling Trinity

Realize: In addition to the Spirit, Jesus has revealed that both the Father and He (the Son) will also dwell in a Catholic man’s soul; this means a Catholic man is blessed to be host to all three Persons of the Trinity in the “home” of his soul.

Believe: Reflect upon the Indwelling Trinity (CCC 260, 1721, 1997, 2615, 2781).

Pray: Jesus, Person of the Trinity, give me the Virtue of Diligence (a part of Temperance) so I always strive to be a most welcoming host to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that I vigilantly rely on the supernatural help of the Trinity in daily life.
