Pentecost – Cycle C – 2nd Option – Jn 14:15-16, 23b-26

Commentary

Jesus continues His Farewell Discourse (Jn 13:31-16:33) during Holy Week, preparing the Apostles for His departure. After revealing that He is the way, the truth, and the life and the unity of the Father and the Son, Jesus now reveals the Father will send the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name to help men.

Calling the Holy Spirit the Counselor (Advocate, Paraclete, or “he who is called to one’s side”) and the “Spirit of Truth”, Jesus reveals the startling reality that the Holy Spirit, with the Father and the Son, will supernaturally dwell in men’s souls (“make our home”). The Spirit will teach and help men remember Christ’s Truth.

The Spirit, though freely given, is not available to all men. Throughout His Gospel, Jesus is explicit about keeping God’s commandments (Mt 5:17-19), which all can be summarized by His call to love God and to love neighbor (Lk 10:27). To receive the Spirit, Jesus confirms that a man must love Jesus and keep His Commandments; men who love Jesus will be loved by the Father, and the Father will send the Spirit to those men. Ominously, Jesus warns that some men do not love Him and will not keep His words; the Holy Spirit will not be sent to those men who reject Jesus (refuse Baptism) and desire to live in sin (CCC 1861).

Be awed by Jesus Christ

Marvel at the mysterious acts of Jesus recalled by His Holy Catholic Church at Pentecost: before the Passion, at the Last Supper, Jesus, with Divine Knowledge, prophesizes He will send the Holy Spirit to reside in men’s souls and proclaim Jesus’ Truth; raised from the dead, the Son of God, with Divine Power, supernaturally anoints the Apostles with the Holy Spirt, which is mysteriously transferred through His breath (Jn 20:22), and establishes a new supernatural reality in the souls of His Apostles; Divine King, Jesus delegates His supernatural power to the Apostles to forgive sins (Jn 20:23) on earth through the Sacrament of Penance.

Fervently pray to receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Realize: The beautiful Feast of Pentecost reminds every Catholic man that the constant help of the Holy Spirit, through His Gifts, is necessary for salvation; no Catholic man can become a saint and be received into Heaven without the Spirit.

Believe: Reflect upon the vow of the Creed, “I believe in the Holy Spirit” (CCC 687-747), the Holy Spirit and the Church (CCC 731-747), and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit(CCC 1830-1831).

Pray: Holy Spirit, give me all of Your Gifts of the Spirit (Fear of the Lord, Piety, Knowledge, Fortitude, Counsel, Understanding and Wisdom) so that I can one day become a saint and be received into Heaven.

Grow in happiness through the Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Realize: Every man wants to be happy but finds many sources of turmoil in his life: restlessness, confusion, loss of purpose, sinful desires, illness, broken relationships, financial hardship, lack of physical safety; every Catholic man who seeks Christ receives the Fruits of the Spirit to not only endure turmoils that break other men, but find the true happiness of loving God and others.

Believe: Reflect upon how the Holy Spirit Comes to your Aid (CCC 2670-2672, 2681) and the Fruits of the Holy Spirit (CCC 1832).

Pray: Holy Spirit,  give me all Your Fruits (Peace, Love, Joy, Patience, Kindness,Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control, Forbearance, Modesty, Chastity) so I find happiness even in turmoil and vibrantly love the Blessed Trinity and all the beautiful souls You bring into my life.
