Solemnity of the Corpus Christi – Sunday – Cycle C – Lk 9:11b-17
Commentary
After the murder of John the Baptist, Jesus withdraws by boat across the Sea of Galilee to a deserted place to be with the Father in solitude. But a large crowd follows and He has a deep visceral reaction to the multitude of desperate people who are sick and hungry.
The Apostles suggest He send the people home; it does not even occur to the Apostles that Jesus could feed the multitude; the 5000 number refers to only the men, and when women and children are included, the count of those fed is much higher. Divine Priest, Jesus previews the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the breaking of the bread, just as He will do at the Last Supper. He draws the 12 Apostles to Himself and allows them to mediate His Grace to mankind as they distribute the bread and fish to the multitude; as priests after Jesus’ Ascension, the Apostles and their successors will feed billions of people with His Body and Blood in the Eucharist at every Mass. Jesus sears the miracle into the minds of the 12 Apostles when He requires each of them to personally fill a basket with the leftovers and they collect up more remains than they had at the beginning.
After the Ascension, the Apostles continue to emphasize the celebration of the Eucharist (Acts 2:42). As early as the 5th century, the Church celebrated a special day in recognition of the Eucharist, and by the 12th century established the Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for the Body of Christ). Because, on Holy Thursday, the Church emphasizes Jesus’ example of loving service by the washing of the Apostle’s feet and the anticipation of the great sorrow of Good Friday, a separate feast day was established to help all Catholics meditate upon and give thanks for the Divine Gift of the Eucharist. Today, Catholics around the world celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi the week after Trinity Sunday, glorifying God and evangelizing the world through public Eucharistic processions.
Be awed by Jesus Christ
Be awed by Jesus in the Feeding of the 5000: Divine King, Jesus acts to definitively reveal His Divinity and train the 12 Apostles, instructing them to find the inadequate resources, distribute the miraculous food and collect up 12 baskets, one for each Apostle; He uses Divine Power to create huge amounts of food; Divine Priest, Jesus prefigures the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
Grow in love and awe of the Mass
Realize: Beginning with the Apostles, Christ’s Holy Catholic Church has grown in understanding and celebration of the Eucharist in the Mass for two millennia.
Believe: Reflect upon the Liturgy of the Eucharist (CCC 1345-1419).
Pray: Holy Spirit, give me the Gifts of Knowledge and Understanding so You help me better know and understand the marvelous Liturgy of the Mass, and I experience overwhelming awe and happiness each time I am blessed to be a witness of Christ’s Passion in the Eucharist.
Joyously receive Christ’s life-saving Body and Blood
Realize: Jesus, with the Divine Wisdom and Power as the Son of God, dies to give every Catholic man His Body and Blood.
Believe: Reflect upon the Eucharist as the Center of the Economy of Salvation (CCC 1333-1344) and is the Source and Summit of the faith.
Pray: Jesus, Holy Eucharist, help me build the Virtues of Gratitude and Piety (parts of Justice) so I grow in gratefulness and piously build a sacramental life, and I have an aching hunger for You and joyously receive Your Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist.
